Hemispheric Social Alliance Now On-Line

 
The Hemispheric Social Alliance, the network of civil society organizations, unions, and human rights and sustainable development groups that staged the "People's Summit" at the 1998 Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile has launched a web page: http://www.asc-hsa.org/sitios.html.

The network has its headquarters in Mexico City, with major affiliates in Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Canada and the United States. The hemisphere's trade union organizations are involved through their regional organization (ORIT). Peasant organizations such as Vía Campesina as well as other regional bodies and national groups also participate. The Hemispheric Social Alliance considers itself to be progressive, but not "rejectionist." It has attempted to become engaged in the FTAA process by subjecting current economic strategy to harsh criticism. As part of this involvement, a new People's Summit is being planned for Quebec City next year.
