Second International Trade
Negotiation Skills Course/II Curso de Capacitación en Negociaciones de Comercio
Internacional, October 14-26. The Summit of the Americas Center in
association with El Centro de Estudios de Integración Económica y Comercio
Internacional (INTEGRAL) held a two-week course from October 14-26 in Miami,
Florida. The first week was an orientation to the theoretical and practical
themes involved in multilateral negotiations. During the second week the course
attendees participated in practical role-playing negotiation exercises based on
a real multilateral trade case from the hemisphere.
An Issue of Impunity: One
Guatemalan Human Rights Group's Lawsuit Against an Ex-Military Dictator with
Sabino Perez, Association in Defense of Human Rights- Ixcan, Guatemala. The
lecture took place October 4, 2001 @ FIU. Perez spoke about the timely issue of
impunity and the first Central American criminal complaint filed against a
sitting politician for human rights violations.

Quebec Summit- Prospects for the FTAA and a Perspective on Three Summits.
Eduardo Gamarra, Director, Latin American and Caribbean Center, Carl Cira,
Director, Summit of the Americas Center, and others who were present in Quebec

Democracy in the Americas
Conference Series
will be taking place at the Hyatt Regency, Downtown Miami. This
conference opens the "Semana Patria Dominicana," a series of
events, which are organized by the Dominican Republic Consulate General in
Miami. The Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Summit of the
Americas Center are the co-sponsors of this part of the State of Democracy
Series. Spanish-English simultaneous interpretation is provided. For more

Democracy
in Latin America Lecture Series
SOAC's
1999-2000 State of Democracy in Latin America Lecture Series is an attempt to
address current political, economic and social issues in key Latin American
countries-including Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela-as well as US-Latin
American relations. Participants have included distinguished North American and
Latin American academics, as well as journalists, government officials and NGO
representatives, leading discussions of the main challenges and progress toward
democracy in the region.
