  • Fujimori's Tainted Third Term: Stability Over Democracy- Peru's New Path? This was the second conference of the State of Democracy in the Americas Conference Series that was co-sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Summit of Americas Center. (June 21, 2000)

  • 18th Annual Journalists and Editors Workshop: Latin America, the US Elections and Beyond.  This annual event brought together journalists, academics and public and private sector leaders to discuss topics in the news involving Latin America and the Caribbean. (May 5-6, 2000)  

 

 

April

  • The Summit of the Americas Center concluded its Social Policy and Welfare in Latin America spring lecture series with a talk by Dr. Victor Tokman, Latin American Regional Director of the International Labor Office in Lima, Peru. Tokman is the author of numerous publications about the informal sector, employment, poverty and income distribution in Latin America. In his speech, The Informal Sector, Social Protection and New ILO Approaches, Tokman spoke about the challenge of providing social protection for the growing numbers of Latin Americans who are turning for work to the informal sector.   • The Summit of the Americas Center continued its spring lecture series, Social Policy and Welfare in Latin America. The focus turned to Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America and the driving force behind the South American common market, MERCOSUR. Helmut Schwarzer, planning and research technician at the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada in Brasília, spoke on Social Security in Brazil: Problems and Prospects for Reform. (April 3, 2000).  

 

 

March

  • The Summit of the Americas Center continued its spring lecture series, Social Policy and Welfare in Latin America.  Dr. Alberto Arenas de Mesa, director of the Office of Research at the Chilean Ministry of Finance, spoke on The Pension Revolution in Chile: An Evaluation of Two Decades.  (March 27, 2000)
      
      

  • Colombia: Armed Conflict, Peace Prospects and Democracy.  This was the first conference as part of the State of Democracy in the Americas Conference Series. This lecture series was co-sponsored by Latin American and Caribbean Center and the Summit of the Americas Center, with speakers from various Colombian organizations and their perspectives on the violence in the region. Spanish-English simultaneous interpretation was provided.  (March 14 and 15, 2000)

  • Can Social Protection Be Extended to Uncovered Workers in Latin America?  Lecture by María Amparo Cruz-Saco, Ph.D., Lenore Tingle Howard Chair and Chairperson of Economics at Connecticut College. An authority on Peruvian political economy and social security, Cruz-Saco gave the second lecture of the Summit of the America spring lecture series entitled Social Policy and Welfare in Latin America (February 21, 2000)
      
      

  • The Summit of the Americas Center kicked off its spring lecture series, Social Policy and Welfare in Latin America, with a lecture by Dr. Fabio Bertranou, professor of economics at the Universidad de Cuyo in Mendoza and the Universidad Empresarial Siglo XXI in Cordoba, Argentina. Dr. Bertranou spoke on Health Care in Argentina, reform in the 90's and Challenges in 2000. (February 7, 2000)

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Democracy in Latin America Lecture Series

  
SOAC's 1999-2000 State of Democracy in Latin America Lecture Series is an attempt to address current political, economic and social issues in key Latin American countries including Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela as well as US-Latin American relations.
